The Real Group - I Sing You Sing

We have sung together for twenty years, made over 2000 performances in many countries all over the world, made 12 CDs in Sweden plus some CDs released elsewhere. Here is an attempt to summarize our history.
The Real Group was formed in 1984. We had been singing in choirs since childhood, and we all played instruments. It was natural for us to form a vocal band.
Bobby McFerrin was a major inspiration at that time. After hearing him sing we understood that the voice can be used in new fascinating ways.
In the beginning we were primarily learning about how to sing a cappella, and to write arrangements for this kind of group. We were very proud if we could sing very fast or difficult. Then there was a period of learning about the recording studio. It took some time before all of us had provided the group with an original composition.
Today we write most of our music ourselves. And we don't really care if a song is fast or slow, difficult or simple, or whatever, as long as we like to sing it. It is not even important for us to sound like instruments. It may appear to others that "our thing" is to sound like instruments. But we are just making music the way we hear it when we listen to a cd or go to a concert. All those impressions have a lot of sounds that come naturally with the musical style, so it is just natural for us to include "instrumental sounds" in our own music. "Why do you do that?" someone might ask. To which we may answer "why not?!!"
